About this Entry
For those of you in Edinburgh/Fife..

Between July 3-23 we're going to be out of the country. Problem is, we have two kitties. I have no experience with kennels, but that seems to be an option, but at £10 per day, i'm looking for other ideas as well.

I've thought about hiring a local young teenage girl to come to the flat every day to look after them for say $5 per day (no idea what's fair). However, this means that a stranger would be daily entering our home (tries not to shiver).

I'm also curious if you know anyone who is in the habit of/is willing to babysit cats at their place for that time. They would have to be kept indoors. For this I guess that £5 per day plus our bringing all the necessary food and whatnot is what I was thinking.

Apr. 25th, 2005 @ 06:32 pm Are we getting a Starbucks in St Andrews?
About this Entry
As I walked past the old John Smith book shop in Market Street today I noticed little posters in the windows. On closer inspection they were information on a recruitment day and the logo in the corner was for Starbucks.

Do we really need another coffee shop? We already have four that I can think of off the top of my head.
Apr. 7th, 2005 @ 01:56 pm Kirkcaldy and the living in thereof..something.
About this Entry
I've already bugged a couple people in here about it, but the cats, the tots, the husband and I are looking to move to Kirkcaldy most likely. Aberdour/Burntisland doesn't have much in the way of rentals atm, and Dalgety Bay seems sort of..not us. Though I could be wrong, never been there. Anyway, Kirkcaldy--any advice or insights you have on the place would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks :)

About this Entry
This is a weird one, but does anyone know what might/might not have happened in St.Andrews on Saturday night/early hours of Sunday morning?

My mum was out getting papers from Tesco early on Sunday morning and said there was a police cordon (good old 'accident' tape) between the jewellers on Market Street and The Vic, and that there was a chalk outline of a body, and some plastic sheeting type stuff over some of it, and maybe something a bit ominous and dark staining the pavement.

My first thought was 'my Mum's having a senior moment' but I really doubt she's having that much of a midlife crisis, heh. My second though was 'April Fool', but as April Fools were meant to all be done by midday on Friday, I'm thinking thats out too. I then wondered if something really had happened, scoured local news webpages and watched all the local news and there's been nothing.

If anyone could shed light on it, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise I may have my mother committed for seeing things. And strange things at that!

Feb. 24th, 2005 @ 09:07 am dumb yank questions
About this Entry
Current Mood: curiouscurious
Okay, say that I love Scotland when I visit this summer (studying abroad in Cambridge and making a side trip up) and say I apply to St. Andrew's new PhD in Creative Writing and say, miracle of miracles, that I get in with full funding. Say all that, okay.

Then what? How hard would it be for my software engineer husband to get a work visa for several years? Would it be nightmarish for one or the other of us to commute? Me from Glasgow or Edin? Or him from Fife?

How difficult is it to find rental housing? decent not ridiculously expensive housing?

Would it be nigh impossible for us to get our dogs into the country? I've heard the canine quarantine regs are stringent but not as bad as they used to be.

How much do the Scots dislike Americans? I already know they will sneer at my thistle tattoo (done as a tribute to my Scottish grandpa) but will they sneer at other things? Is it hard to make friends and feel at home as a yank?

So many questions. Thinking about my future grad school options keeps me from sleeping at night! Any help would be much appreciated!
